Klara and the Sun
Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro is a story set in the future, seen through the eyes of Klara, an artificial friend. When Klara goes home with Josie, she does everything she knows how to do to be the best friend she can be and to help Josie get well. She believes there is a magical power in the sun that can help heal Josie and she goes to great lengths to make this happen.
Keeping the focus on Klara’s inner thoughts, the novel begs the question, “Can an AI feel love?” Ishiguro hints at a dystopian world outside, but it is always just out of the readers view. Although I understood why he did this, I found it frustrating.
Sparse, beautiful and deeply moving, told from a unique voice not heard before, I appreciated this book. However, I was still left longing for more.
